The Disorder:
The psychological disorder that the film is dealing with is known as post-traumatic stress disorder. The traumatizing event that strongly impacted Charlie's life was the death of his three daughters and wife in a plane crash. Because of this event, he had developed this disorder causing him to deteriorate socially and revert to a junior form of mind. This disorder has been identified as an anxiety disorder. It's long term effects of anxiety and psychological responses distinguishes it from significantly less powerful acute stress disorder. Such traumatic events capable of causing such a disorder prove greatly detrimental to one's abilities to socialize with others in a proper manner. This traumatic event has consequently also resulted in the mood disorder of depression. Clearly this depression is caused by the loss of his family as most anyone would be depressed after losing the lives of their loved ones.

Another possible diagnosis of Charlie Fineman is Dissociative Identity Disorder (aka Multiple Personality Disorder) which is a high probability because Charlie commonly acts as if not an adult (which is a symptom of this disorder) who most definitely finished school with a degree in dentistry. A man of this education would most likely have developed any disorders after the traumatizing event. Dissociative Identity Disorder (aka Multiple Personality Disorder) is commonly diagnosed after any faced trauma which in this case was the loss of his loved ones. Those with this disorder commonly express multiple personalities which Charlie strongly portrays. Sometimes he is in the playful and relatively cheerful mood while in other moments he is extremely sensitive and reactive to certain patterns in the environment.

Charlie might also have ADHD because it is clear that he is commonly distracted and acts childlike sometimes which are common symptoms of ADHD. ADHD definitely includes elements of disruptive behavior disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, and antisocial disorder. These are all symptoms that Charlie Fineman can be said to possess. He is portrayed as very antisocial and shy to others in many moments except with his friend Johnson to whom he is relatively open with.

Treatment:
There is a wide variety of possibilities in order to relieve if not cure post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and dissociative identify disorder. Instead of trying to suppress the traumatic event as Charlie does in the film Reign Over Me, one with PTSD should be urged to open up and recollect memories about the event. This way, one will be able to seize control of certain memories of events.

Trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy: This type of therapy involves opening yourself up to the trauma and embracing the events that occurred. Of course, no one wants to remember certain events that upset them, but through this kind of therapy, one will be able to balance such disturbing thoughts into a more positive image.

Family therapy: Family therapy is essentially the communication with your family in order to work out problems since PTSD commonly impacts one's social abilities with those around them.

Medication: There is medication to relieve those with PTSD including Prozac and Zoloft which are antidepressants. Of course, such medication does not cure the disorder but merely removes the elements of anxiety and depression.

EMDR: (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing): EMDR involves stimulation through rhythm and noises. The object of EMDR is to allow the brain's information processing system to flow properly once again after being somewhat stuck due to extreme stress usually occurred in times of trauma. Therefore, emotions happening during a traumatizing event can become reintegrated into one's memory and properly processed rationally.

Lesson Learned:
I've learned that traumatic experiences can greatly impact one's life - immensely more devastating than I had imagined. It is evident that one traumatizing event can not only lead to one disorder, but can lead to several disorders all in the effect of one event. At first while I thought that PTSD was the only disorder that Charlie was associated with, it is evident that he is capable of being diagnosed with several others as he displays many of the symptoms of other disorders. Another factual lesson learned is not to bottle up emotions because that will only deepen the wound having a detrimental effect on one's progress to socialize properly. This movie also aided my realization that love has such a powerful ability to not only hurt but heal, perhaps a universal elixir to one's pains.

Reason for choosing film:
My reason for choosing this film was initially its appearance of depth in friendship as well as relationships.

Grading:
Cut and paste the following onto your wikipage and then fill it out.
Use of class time 5/5 Reason for grade: I think I used my class time efficiently without working on any other task other than the project. I also finished most of my research as soon as I found out about the project making it easy to finish on time.
Depth of work done 13/15 Reason for grade: Although I feel like my research was sufficient enough for this project, I can never be sure what Charlie Fineman's real diagnosis is. At first I thought it was simply Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder but it turns out to be much more complicated than just one simple disorder. In fact, the one traumatizing event led to a chain reaction of possibly several disorders. However, I feel that for some reason I am missing something, perhaps due to the complexity of Charlie's condition - a symptom of Charlie that I cannot diagnose. Therefore I don't believe that I am able to obtain full marks for this category.
What I learned 5/5 Reason for grade: I think I was able to learn a lot from watching this film. Not only was I able to learn certain elements of Psychology but I was able to learn certain virtues in life and elements that should be cherished now. It's safe to say that this emotional film had a significant impact on my perspective of the world today. Life can become a sad story but as in the film, positive ends can arise.
Wikispace's attractiveness 5/5 Reason for grade: I think the Wikispaces's attractiveness is sufficient enough to display the content that I am trying to portray. I inserted certain clips throughout the movie to convey certain elements in the movie that I thought were worth displaying.
